DESCRIPTION

Impressive rare hand carved teak cabinet from the island of Madura. The beautiful patina and thickness of the wood is incredible. This unique cabinet with original hardware was originally used to store shadow puppets as indicated on the inside of the door with a faded drawing of a shadow puppet. Shadow puppets serve as a vibrant form of story telling, entertainment and cultural expression. Full dimensions;  Bevelled top 18” deep x 35” wide. The body of the cabinet is 30” wide x 14” deep. The bevelled top is 2.5” thick. Circa early 1900.

This beautiful one of a kind cabinet was sourced in the spirit of Wabi Sabi, a Japanese philosophy that beauty can be found in imperfection and impermanence. It is a beauty of things modest and humble. A beauty of things unconventional. It is the opposite of vulgarity. The costs of achieving this kind of minimalism are seemingly inconsistent with its mission of aesthetic humility. This kind of luxury is for a select few. The Emperor of Japan had a Wabi garden. Wabi is for people who already have a lot.
