Century old mortar originally used to grind rice. We sanded it down and had our master carver add our unique minimalist carving to produce this impressive container. Small butterflies were added to one side. The inside is 14” deep x 7” diameter. This can also be turned upside down and used as a side table. Finished with a light natural oil revealing the beautiful wood grain. It’s all in the details.
This container or side table was hand made in the spirit of Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese philosophy that beauty can be found in imperfection and impermanence. It is a beauty of things modest and humble. A beauty of things unconventional. It is the opposite of vulgarity. The costs of achieving this kind of minimalism are seemingly inconsistent with its mission of aesthetic humility. This kind of luxury is for a select few: The Emperor of Japan had a Wabi garden. Wabi is for people who already have a lot.
