Description

For the primitive collector. This rare bench or chaise is hand carved from a single teak slab from Madura. Circa 1890. Beautiful hand carved legs and patina on this impressive piece. Both usable and sculptural. Full dimensions; 74” wide x 14” to 19” deep and 15” seat height x 22.5” back rest height. The width of the top is spectacular and varies from 1.5” to 2” thick.

This antique bench or chaise was hand made in the spirit of Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese philosophy that beauty can be found in imperfection and impermanence. It is a beauty of things modest and humble. A beauty of things unconventional. It is the opposite of vulgarity. The costs of achieving this kind of minimalism are seemingly inconsistent with its mission of aesthetic humility. This kind of luxury is for a select few: The Emperor of Japan had a Wabi garden. Wabi is for people who already have a lot.
