80.5 x 40.5″ x 23″ high.
Rare antique teak day bed from the island of Madura. The patina on the wood is stunning. Circa 1900. The length of the arm is 46” and hand carved from one piece of wood. Taken from my finest collection and impossible to source now. The detail on the legs and arm rest are beautiful. Full dimensions; 80.5″ wide x 40.5” seat depth x 18.5″ seat height x 23″ height back rest.
This day bed was hand made in the spirit of Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese philosophy that beauty can be found in imperfection and impermanence. It is a beauty of things modest and humble. A beauty of things unconventional. It is the opposite of vulgarity. The costs of achieving this kind of minimalism are seemingly inconsistent with its mission of aesthetic humility. This kind of luxury is for a select few: The Emperor of Japan had a Wabi garden. Wabi is for people who already have a lot.
