Beautiful antique indigo Ikat textile, from the island of Sumba. The stripes and stars seem modern, yet mixed with the traditional motif panel with mythical characters and sea horses, work so well together. On the opposite side the weave is reversed and more faded as shown in last few images. Ikat is an ancient technique which is used to add patterns to textiles. Fabulous on a sofa, bed, as a wall hanging or to wear as a shawl. Sumbanese textiles are deeply personal; they follow a distinct systematic form but also show the individuality of the weavers and the villages where they are produced. Internationally, Sumbanese textiles are collected as examples of textile designs of the highest quality and are found in major museums around the world. The designs are created in the yarns rather than on the finished cloth, resulting in both sides patterned with bold contrasting colors. Multiple colors and complicated patterns are difficult to create. The indigo and white are the hardest to find. We only source the best.
