A beautiful ancient mortar originally used to pound rice from Sumatra, is repurposed as an art piece, container or side table with a glass top or left as is. Our master carver added the minimalist carving whilst respecting the organic wood. Finished with a natural oil revealing the unique wood grain. Full dimensions; 15” x 14.5” x 17” high x inside 4” deep. Hand carved from a single block of wood. It’s all in the details.
This antique rice pounder was sourced in the spirit of Wabi Sabi, a Japanese philosophy that beauty can be found in imperfection and impermanence. It is a beauty of things modest and humble. A beauty of things unconventional. It is the opposite of vulgarity. The costs of achieving this kind of minimalism are seemingly inconsistent with its mission of aesthetic humility. This kind of luxury is for a select few: The Emperor of Japan had a Wabi garden. Wabi is for people who already have a lot.
