Worn by adult noblewomen high on the head, like a crown. These hand cut combs from Sumba are usually hand carved from mottled tortoiseshell or occasionally from buffalo horn. These two are hand made from polished metal with stunning patina. Rare. C 19th Century. After they have been carved and polished, they are curved horizontally to a semi-circle. Animal motifs shown here also appear in textile designs of hinggi, which are prized cloths worn Sumbanese male elite. These could also be installed on a wall as a sconce. The price reflects one. We have a pair.
